Monte Real is today one of the most popular spa towns in the country. The Monte Real hot springs and spa are within the Pinhal (pine forest) of Leiria, in a region with several attractions, such as the beaches, the towns of Leiria and Marinha Grande and the Monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça (classified as World Heritage sites). Important archaeological remain discovered between 1807 and 1810 showed that the Romans knew of the Monte Real springs. Among the artifacts found were various coins that are now housed in the National Archaeological Museum. Although it not known when the present town of Monte Real was founded , there are documents that link it to the reign of Dom Dinis (14th century) and the time the Leiria Pine Forest was planted.
