Where golf courses and residential resorts are being built, strict building regulations are enforced to preserve the character of the Lisbon coastline and the medieval towns that dot it. The Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort has a Severiano Ballesteros-designed 18-hole golf course with a clubhouse as its centerpiece. The resort is next to the medieval town of Óbidos, and overlooks the Lagoa de Óbidos, the largest lagoon in Portugal and a renowned centre for water sports.  The resort features two and three bedroom apartments with communal swimming pools, and three and four bedroom villas with their own private pools. At Palmela Village, on the edge of the Arrábida Mountains south of Lisbon, visitors can use the 18-hole golf course on site, or choose from another 18 courses nearby. Play happens year-round thanks to the Algarve’s warm climate.  The resorts features villas with private pools, apartments shared pools, a restaurant and tennis courts.
