As of June 15, 2011, Mangualde has a beach with sand and salt water. 500 people developed the project in 3 months, by the exact date it had been planned for, says the “Público” today. The entry fee is 5€ and discounts are available. The first artificial salt-water beach in Europe was inaugurated today in Mangualde. About 500 people worked over the past 3 months to turn over 20 thousand square meters of abandoned land into this so-called Live Beach. The waves did not make it this year though. That is a feature to be added on in the 2nd year of operation. The company Live It Well – which established protocol with the town hall of Mangualde – said that they chose Mangualde due to a study which proved Viseu to be the only district in the country with a significant increase in population in the summer months, a time at which the population of the area reaches 1 million, and being only 700 thousand during the rest of the year. The beach is open from June 15th to September 15th, daily until 7 p.m.
