Friday, 19 January 2007 18:38
As you travel eastward along the Douro you enter some of the most beautiful and wildest areas in Europe, the Côa Valley, declared a World Heritage Site in 1998. An environmental impact study was ordered in 1989, in preparation for the construction of a large dam near the mouth of the river, to evaluate the cultural heritage items that would be submerged or destroyed as a result. An important array of archaeological sites was identified, including several rock-shelters with prehistoric paintings. Construction of the dam was halted and this ensemble of finds was integrated into a Archaeological Park in 1995. The exceptional concentration of pre-historic rock-art and engravings in the Côa Valley, as of the Upper Palaeolithic period, from 22,000 to 10,000 BC, is the most outstanding example of early human artistic activity in this form, anywhere in the world. The Côa Valley Archaeological Park limits the number of daily visitors, so reservations for individual sites must be made in advance by phone (+351 279 768 260), fax (+351 279 768 270) or e-mail (visitas.pavc@ipa.mincultura.pt). Trained guides drive visitors in park vehicles to the rock art sites, with each tour lasting approximately 90 minutes.
