This year the European Blue Flag Association has given Blue Flags to 15 beaches of the Madeira Archipelago. The Blue Flag is a symbol of environmental quality awarded annually to beaches and marinas that put themselves forward to be assessed against strict criteria that include water quality; environmental information and education; environmental management; and equipment, safety and services.     Funchal is home to the highest concentration of awarded flags: Barreirinha, Clube Naval, Ponta Gorda/Docas do Governador, Poças do Gomes/Doca do Cavacas and Praia Formosa. The remaining flags were awarded to beaches spread around the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, attesting to the quality of the bathing complexes and beaches offered by this destination: Praiadas Palmeiras, Roca Mar, Galo Mar, Garajau, Ponta Delgada complex, Faial complex and the Porto Moniz natural pools. The island of Porto Santo was granted flags for its Calheta, Fontinha and Ribeiro Salgado beaches.
