Despite a severe storm that hit the
island of
Madeira, about 300 miles off the coast of
Morocco, on February 20th, the
Regional Secretary for Tourism and Transport say that the island’s hotel infrastructure is unaffected.
Madeira a tourism official Conceição Estudante says that the island’s many hotels were operating safely and normally. "It would be a disaster" to declare Madeira a disaster area,” Alberto João Jardim, President of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, said when asked about the islands 2 million annual visitors. The island's government has uploaded to the Web
new images and
videos of visitors and locals strolling on the cleaned streets of the island's main city Funchal, to show that the situation in
Madeira is returning to normal. Air and maritime traffic are also back to normal and most public transport has been restored. Public transportation in Funchal is available with 30 routes. Water and power supplies had been re-established all over the
Island, with the exception in rural areas. While tour operators have reported some cancellations the island’s govemnt, with support from the European Union and Portuguese Government has been working around the clock to repair storm damage, and welcome visitors to a place always know to be security, warm, peaceful and enchanting. The island’s museums are all reopened. Many schools reopened today. Public services are operating and will be normalized soon
. Mobile phone connections and fixed communications network are operating in the entire
Island.
