The tragic effects of the recent unprecedented storm on the Island of Madeira have been widely reported. The Regional Government with the support of Portuguese Government have placed more than 500 vehicles across the island to clear roads, restore services, and effect needed repairs. The city of Funchal will have most of its municipal services restored by the end of today, February 22, 2010. The rains did not impact the great majority of hotels in anyway and the airport is open and functioning normally. Most main highway are clear and operational.
The people of Portugal are thankful for all the international support that has been focused on Madeira. Support for the Red Cross and other organizations has been received to help the 40 families who were made temporarily homeless. The Regional Government, in cooperation with Government of Portugal, is working around the clock to effect repairs.
