Lisbon's centuries old flea market, and indeed one of the oldest in Europe, is called Thieves' Market (Feira da Ladra). Located at Campo de Santa Clara, near the Castle of São Jorge, in the Alfama district, the market dates all the way back to 1195 when it was called the Mercado Franco de Lisboa. Open from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. every Tuesday and Saturday, the Feira da Ladra is a large sprawling mass of stalls selling everything from antiques, to second-hand clothes, to jewelry, ceramics etc. as well as a wide range of interesting items from Portuguese-speaking Africa.
