The survey says that Lisbon is popular for being more affordable than other major cities. A tourist-satisfaction survey by the Lisbon Tourism Observatory (TL) has found that international visitors to the city are attracted to it more because of the price. Carried out during April, June, August and October 2009, the study was based on answers from more than 5,000 tourists in and around Lisbon. This year it was ‘price’ that was the main motive of choice, making Lisbon a more economic alternative to other tourist destinations. From 2007 to 2009 the price went from being a least relevant factor to the most important in making the decision to visit Lisbon. Last year almost half (46.6 %) of visitors chose Lisbon for being cost-worthy, while in 2008 that figure was 27 %, and in 2007, 16 %.Today, the decision to visit the Portuguese capital is made based more on recommendations from family and friends, and the city’s cool image. Two thirds of the survey’s participants claimed their return to Lisbon was ‘probable’ or even ‘highly likely’, down from around 90 percent.
