3. Carnaval in the Azores

This year, Carnaval is just four hours away if you opt to spend the holiday on the Mid-Atlantic Islands of the Azores, where “Shrove Tuesday” celebrations have taken place for centuries. SATA Airlines is offering travel packages at $999 per person (includes tax, double occupancy). Travelers can chose from several hotels and three islands to enjoy the festivities.

In the Azores, Mardi Gras is known as “Carnaval,” a four-day celebration starting on Saturday, February 9, 2013 and continuing through Tuesday, February 12, 2013. Parades and pageants are heart of the Carnaval festivities. There is lively music, colorful costumes, hand-made masks, and floats in this mild climate, mid-Atlantic archipelago.

On the island of São Miguel, known for its pineapples and tea, you can chose from four hotels in historic Ponta Delgada, the Azores’ main city on the island of São Miguel. Weeklong packages include six nights lodging, air transport from Boston, and breakfast.

Carnaval has a sweet taste on São Miguel; with street vendors selling fried sweet dough, called a Malassada. The festival on the Azores biggest island starts of with a black tie grand ball, and heats up with music. There is a children’s parade in the streets of the capital, Ponta Delgada, with children in costume from each school district on the island. Then, a massive Carnaval parade fills the streets into the wee hours.

Smaller towns have choir concerts, parades, and the town of Lagoa has a big fried dough festival, called the Festa da Malassada.

All SATA travel packages are available for Tuesday and Friday departures.

The decor has kept traces of the beach house and relaxed atmosphere you want on holiday.  Areia Branca Beach Hostel is the result of a wage between two friends on the passion for the beach and for their sports, surfing, bodyboarding, paddling, tennis and others. The place immediately captivates with a superb view of an extensive beach, the smell of the sea and a relaxed atmosphere. Situated in the center of Praia da Areia Branca, a small seaside town in the county of Lourinhã, the hostel has a prime location, with a one-minute walk from the beach and various services (ATM, supermarket, restaurants, bars, etc.). The town, still protected from mass tourism, is warm and homely, with a serene and youthful spirit, ideal for spending a relaxing holiday at low cost in western Portugal. However, its privileged geographical location is close to the big cities such as Lisbon (Portugal capital) and Peniche. At night, the beach bars are hopping and parties take place. The surrounding beaches are a beauty hard to beat and have great conditions for the practice of sports in the water such as surfing, bodyboarding, kitesurfing and paddleboarding. This is the ideal place for visitors to practice sports but also for those who want a quiet holiday at the seaside. The natural conditions of the area caused the large expanse of beautiful beaches such as Peralta, Areal, Praia da Areia Branca, Vale Frades, Caniçal e Paimogo. You can stroll along the waterfront, exercise, play volleyball and beach football, throw rackets or just sunbathe and listen to the waves. But the beach is part of an ecosystem that needs to be protected, so please do not pollute the environment and, if possible, clean the beach.
