Portugal is one of the best places to travel to inEurope this fall. With lower prices, new hotels, and growing popularity, Portugal is in line to have one of the best years on recent record with American travelers - in fact Americans have moved up one position to the 8th biggest inbound market for Portugal.Five-star hotels in Portugal often cost half of those of the same quality in Paris, London, or Madrid. With an average of 84 Euros per night, Portugal is the sixth most affordable country in Europe, according to the Hotel Price Index for the second quarter of 2010. Lisbon is one of the most affordable places to stay in Europe, according to trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI), which is published monthly by the hotel price comparison site www.trivago.co.uk. With an average nightly rate of just 81 Euros, Lisbon is less than half the cost to visit the most expensive cities in Europe.
In 2009 Porto was considered One of the "World's Sexiest Affordable Destinations" by Travel & Leisure Magazine.
In April 2010, Lisbon was voted Europe's Best Vacation Destination in a survey conducted by the European Consumers Organization, which described "the wonderful city" as "the most beautiful place to go [in Europe] for a trip or a week. Lisbon beat out competition from Barcelona, London, Copenhagen, Bilbao, Lyon, Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague and Helsinki, which together, and in that order, formed the top ten for 2010.
In 2011 the Post Office's annual Holiday Costs Barometer reveals that Families eating out in Portugal, can expect to pay 65% less than in the more cuisine-proud Italy. Portugal is also one of the cheapest destinations for families going on a self-catering holiday according to the Post Office Study. As of June 2011 TAP Portugal added a Lisbon-Miami route to their Newark-Lisbon and Porto offerings, and SATA will expand its summer flights from Boston to Lisbon and Madeira. The authentic product, new infrastructure and good value are the three factors that are making Portugal the place to go in 2011. Also, more low cost European carriers are flying into several cities in Portugal making it more accessible, especially if travelers are combining two European destinations.
