1. THIS MONTH'S TRAVEL SECRET: Portugal Debuts in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition
The 2010 annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition is out; and it features, for the first time, Portugal as backdrop to some of the most beautiful women and bathing suits in the world.
As a city, Lisbon is often referred to one of the most exciting places in Europe with new hotels, museum, eateries, nightclubs and attractions. Add to that it's 4,000 years of history, and unique pallet of monuments, trolleys and its picturesque setting on the estuary of the Tejo River. And, Portugal is the hot new place to go in the world of wine.
The 2010 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue comes out at a time when media outlets are calling Portugal a close and an affordable tourism destination, including recent reports by Hotels.com, Hotel Index and Trivago Hotel Price Index.
The S.I. models and crew stayed at the Ritz Lisbon Four Seasons during the shoot, and flew on TAP Portugal to and from Lisbon where they were got logistic support by Turismo de Portugal, Associação de Turismo de Lisboa and ViniPortugal.
Sports Illustrated Photo Shoot Locations
As a capital city Lisbon is full of life, but just a half hour away, there is the great extent of beach from the Costa da Caparica to Cascais. Between the south bank of the Tejo Estuary and Cape Espichel, the coastline features a huge 30 kilometers of excellent beaches replete with golden sands, sea cliffs and fossil lined ravines.
Lisbon Region has a remarkable concentration of natural beauties, with the sea to the west, the River Zêzere and the River Tejo to the northeast and the estuary of the River Sado to the south.
The natural beauty of the city matched perfectly with the elegant models. The shooting sessions continued in the lively and sophisticated Estoril Coast, well known for beaches perfect for practicing water sports.
Another photo session took place on Portinho da Arrábida beach. A bay with white sand, framed by the green of the mountains of the Serra da Arrábida Natural Park, where many rare and very ancient plant species are to be found amidst the splendor of the vegetation.
Not too far away, in Azeitão, the models were photographed at one of the finest Renaissance palaces in Portugal - Quinta da Bacalhôa, also famous for their wine. The 500-year-old Bacalhôa Palace, a Portuguese national monument surrounded by botanical gardens, a wine shop, and a lake graced with vineyards. Additionally, Portugal's 100-plus unique grape varieties, its ancient history and culture combined with modern hotels integrated into the landscape show progress while maintaining the charm of the ancient culture.

5. EATS:
This month, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue is focused on Lisbon, and the shoot even stopped at some local wineries – not surprising as the Lisbon region (which was known as Estremadura until the 2008 vintage) has more DOCs than any other Region of Portugal: a total of nine. The Colares region begins around Cascais, beyond the surfing beach of Guincho, inland from Cabo da Roca point. The vines of Colares are planted deep into the sand dunes, and the star grape of Colares is the Ramisco, hardly found elsewhere in Portugal, while Colares whites are based on Malvasia grapes.
DOC Bucelas is just 12 miles north of Lisbon, producing some of Portugal’s best white wines. Bucelas (white only, both still and sparkling) is fresh, dry and crisp, based on the Arinto variety grape.
Just north of Bucelas, on the banks of the River Tejo, is the small region of Arruda. This is a charming land of hills, an ancient ruined castle, old Roman roads, historic windmills aside modern wind turbines, and vineyards, growing mostly red grapes.
North of Arruda is the rolling countryside around the town of Alenquer, protected from the Atlantic winds by the hills of the Serra de Montejunto. It’s cooler to the seaward side of Montejunto, in DOC Torres Vedras region. This is a home of light, dry, white wines, including a lower alcohol white known as Vinho Leve. North of Alenquer, is the DOC Óbidos area, with the famed, walled medieval town of Óbidos on its north-western edge. The region’s north-eastern tip is the bright fishing city of Peniche and the Cabo Carvoeiro cliffs. Northwards beyond the cape, is the vast pine forest, the Pinhal de Leiria and the vineyards of Encostas de Aire, Lisbon’s largest DOC. This is hilly country, where pears, apples, peaches and figs grow alongside vineyards. The region surrounds the castle-crowned city of Leiria, and the monumental monasteries at Batalha and Alcobaça (UNESCO World Heritage sites).
Wine routes: Choose from the Rota dos Vinhos de Bucelas, or the Rota da Vinha, or the Vinho do Oeste. The latter offers three possibilities: Quintas de Alenquer, Linhas de Torres, and Óbidos.
