The European Backpacker Index for 2012 ranks Lisbon the most affordable Western European capital, and the 18th most affordable city in Europe overall.
Since 2011, financial price increases have mostly been modest, but exchange-rate shifts (which will continue to shift) have caused some changes in ranking from the 2011 list. They said, “The whole place is charming and is an excellent travel bargain compared to similar cities in Europe. Hotels and hostels are unusually affordable considering the high standards here, and bargains are usually easy to find outside of the busiest summer months.” There’s good news for Americans in that (at least early in 2012) the US Dollar is up either a little or a lot versus the European currencies, so many cities will actually feel slightly cheaper this year.
