The Jewish community in the United States will form an Association of Friends of the Synagogue of Ponta Delgada to restore Synagogue "Sahar Hassamain,” founded in 1836 in the city center. It has been abandoned for a generation.

The formation of an Association of Friends of the Synagogue of Ponta Delgada in the United States, came at a meeting organized in Fall River, by Senator Michael Rodrigues, between the Jewish community and the City Council to support the old synagogue in Ponta Delgada, one of the oldest buildings of its kind that still remains in the Azores.

With the creation of the Association of Friends of the Synagogue in the United States, the community living wants to contribute to the interpretation of documents, while it will proceed to grow knowledge about the history of Jewish heritage in Ponta Delgada.

In 2011, experts of the Research Centre for Jewish Studies at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, have expressed interest in supporting the restoration of the artifacts found in the building.
